How this estimate is worked out — and what it isn't

This is an estimate from ten questions, not a TMUA score. The real test is 40 questions across two papers, and the official 1.0–9.0 scale is set by conversion tables published per sitting that nobody outside the exam board has in advance. Anyone quoting you a score to one decimal place off a short quiz is guessing.

Here is exactly what we do, so you can judge it yourself:

Your percentage correct is mapped onto the 1.0–9.0 scale using two published anchors: the mean TMUA score sits near 4.5, and the scale is designed so roughly a third of candidates clear 6.5.
The band's width comes from the sampling error on ten questions. Ten is a small sample, so the honest band is wide — around a full point either side. That width is the point, not a hedge.
It assumes these ten are of typical TMUA difficulty. They are written to that standard, but they have not been sat by a cohort and calibrated against one, so treat the centre as soft.
